Singing and Choices

So not that long ago I had a busy day with a lot of beautiful collaborations. I know I referenced this crazy week earlier. This day happened and it was beautiful!

As a parent, teacher and singer decisions are our way to make each moment happen. I am going to decide to brew some tea now and continue writing...

Done!

Ok so the choices we make as humans matter. I make choices all the time. I woke up this morning. I made coffee, yes, I love all hot beverages equally and drink them even when it is almost 100 degrees outside hot! I got dressed. I moved furniture, I do this often. My husband just asked me, "dragon or pirate" I easily answered pirate and then explained that it was the best choice and why. Feel free to comment below on whether you agree or disagree.

Our choice as singers can help guide the audience to a certain feeling. I struggled with one part of my narration as the composer wrote some words in a rhythm that was not intuitive. Here is an example of what I mean:

Say this sentence out loud:

When I inflect a sentence I can do so in a number of ways.

-

-dramatic pause

-

-dramatic pause

-

Ok here are some ways you could have said this. The syllable that is underlined is where the weight occurs.

When I inflect a sentence I can do so in a number of ways. - focuses on time and what.

When I inflect a sentence I can do so in a number of ways. - focuses on my ability and choice.

*Side note - I changed these above sentences about 4 times before landing here. I think knowing this shows even more the amount of choices we have.

When I inflect a sentence I can do so in a number of ways. just wrong.

Another way we choose as singers is tone. I have had a lot of fun playing with various tones and the in between. Also, for the crazy day I got to sing The Edge of Glory. The band decided to swing it and give it a easy feel. I chose to change my tone from a straight pop sound to what could be described as a lighter and jazzier sound. It was a choice, it was different but the song was still lovely.

I hope this week you consider your choices. What choices are you making because people made them before you? What choices are you making to make something different? Why did you make those changes? Is the dragon or pirate the winner?
